There was no question of whether or not to include this song. Originally a song to a little boy, my dad changed the lyrics for me and my sisters so that it would be to a girl. It is about Dad being here to protect us, and he sang it to us at bed time. One year, when I was about four years old, when he left for his mandatory month of military service, he recorded himself singing it into a tape recorder, saying “laila tov,” (good night) at the end and making the sound for two kisses. I played it every night before bed, holding his blue t-shirt which he’d left for me to keep while he was away.
It was a bit of a challenge to remember which lyrics he kept and changed, because he was the only one I could ask, and asking would have ruined the surprise. I put it together as best I could from memory.
