about

This is the first song I ever played on guitar. At age eleven or twelve, I wandered into my parents’ room where my dad was sitting with a guitar book of Israeli folk songs, playing this song on a classical guitar that had been kicking around for as long as I can remember. I walked over and asked him to show me how he was doing it, and he taught me A minor, D minor, and E chords. There is also a G chord in there which he showed me how to do with just my pinky. It's an old lullaby written by the poet Natan Yonatan, about a little sail-boat and a sad-eyed little boy pacing on the shore. He wonders, if all of the sailors fall asleep, how will the boat return? Like several Israeli folk songs, the melody is actually a Russian one. Israel is very much a country of immigrants who brought melodies with them and applied them to Hebrew texts, new and old.
