A song comparing the longings of the heart to the longings of the shorelines for the water, where sand and stone are like heartbreak, itself. It doesn’t say what kind of heartbreak it is, but the second verse alludes to longing for the past, the beloved house of one’s youth. This is a melody I have known since my early childhood, and I sang it before knowing what such longing might feel like. Recording these lyrics in Montreal, with remembrance of my youth in Jerusalem and my family home, struck me as poignant, indeed. It’s one of my oldest sister’s favourite songs, as well.
